Like offset paper, coated paper falls under the broader category of offset printing paper. However, unlike uncoated paper, coated paper has a layer of coating applied to its surface. This coating enhances its optical properties and improves its printability, allowing for more vibrant colors and sharper details in printed images. Based on the number of coated sides, coated paper can be categorized into C1S (Coated One Side) paper and C2S (Coated Two Sides) paper.
As the name suggests, C1S paper has a coating on only one side, while the other side undergoes a light coating treatment to improve adhesive compatibility. Since only one side is smooth and optimized for ink absorption, C1S paper is ideal for printing items that require a single-sided display, such as premium packaging and labels.
C2S paper is coated on both sides, ensuring even surface tension, which enhances flatness and prevents curling. Additionally, since both sides are printable, C2S paper saves time and materials during printing. This type is commonly used for brochures, magazines, and product catalogs.
After the coating process, coated paper undergoes a calendering treatment, which determines whether it becomes glossy or matte.
Glossy coated paper is produced using a supercalendering process, achieving a high gloss level of 65% to 69%. This results in vivid colors, rich details, and enhanced contrast. It is widely used for advertisements, packaging, and promotional materials, as it helps printed images appear more vibrant and eye-catching.
Matte coated paper, on the other hand, undergoes a softer calendering process, resulting in a lower gloss level of around 28% to 32%. It does not reflect light, giving a more elegant and premium appearance in photography. Matte coated paper is also thinner, whiter, and easier to print on, providing a refined and textured finish.
Beyond these classifications, coated paper also varies in weight, which affects its thickness and intended use. For example, 100-128gsm coated paper is ideal for magazine pages, while 157gsm coated paper is commonly used for brochure pages and posters.
